Friday Musings, November 10

By Adam Johnson (@Slappin5)

Welcome to another edition of Friday Musings. Today will be a simple version, with a word about a few of the new things on the site and a ranking of my favorite basketball podcasts. Lets get to it...

I have added six player profiles to our greatest players list;

#77, Chris Bosh
#149, Spencer Haywood
#162, Anthony Davis
#268, Rudy LaRusso
#279, Sean Elliott
#286, Anthony Mason

I also added four moments to our greatest moments list this week, three of which occurred during intense conference finals series. Moment #136 involves Kobe Bryant hitting a huge three in game 2 of the '04 Finals, the other three are Kawhi's block on Russ in 2014, The Charles Smith Game and McHale blocking Toney in an epic game 6. These have been so fun to write about and remember, I hope you all are enjoying them too.

I am addicted to podcasts. They have become my favorite form of entertainment/information gathering. I first started listening to them in 2009, only subscribing to a few and waiting on each episode with baited breath. I now subscribe to over 20 and listen to probably 35-40 episodes of different shows per week. The 1.5x speed has become a must for me and, yes, I know I have a problem. Some of my favorites are The Totally Football Show, WTF, The Watch, House of Carbs and Puck Soup. However, this is a basketball website so I am now going to rank my favorite basketball podcasts.

1. Dunc'd On
Nate Duncan hosts this daily show that is probably the most in depth basketball podcast out there. Danny Leroux joins Nate for most shows and the two of them are experts on the salary cap and are able to break down every transaction with a fine tooth comb. Nate also balances out the daily talk and news with unique guests that do deep dives on their area of expertise. It may not be the most entertaining podcast of all-time but it is the best basketball podcast right now.

2. The Lowe Post
Anyone who follows basketball knows who Zach Lowe is and his podcast has become a must listen.

3. The Basketball Friends (Leverage the Chat)
This is a relatively new venture that used to operate under a different moniker. Producer, Jade Hoye, formerly of ESPN's True Hoop podcast, branched out on his own and has created a burgeoning network of different shows. Known names like Tom Haberstroh, Zach Harper and Amin Elhassan join personalities like BLK Tray and Big Wos to create a conversational style that can also be informative.

4. The Starters
NBA TV's daily show, The Starters, has become a hit as the international cast balances solid analysis with the fun side of the game. I do not listen to their podcast every day, but their "Drop" podcast is a must listen every Friday.

5. Over and Back: Stories About NBA History
This one is slightly self serving, since I have appeared on the show multiple times, but given the site that you are reading right now is about the history of the game, then this show belongs. Jason Mann is frequently joined by Rich Kraetsch to discuss various topics relating to the history of the NBA.
