In the past few years, Triumph Books has put out a series of books called 100 Things (blank) Fans Should Know & Do Before They Die. There are different versions that cover the four major North American sports leagues as well as some college teams. I had seen these books around for a couple of years, but the first one I bought (seeing as I am from San Antonio) is the one about the Spurs. Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News wrote it, and I recently finished it. Naturally, I had some thoughts…
This book is really digestible, as it is broken down into 100 mini chapters because, you know, 100 things. Monroe does a really good job of covering the entire history of the Spurs and not just focusing on the Duncan-Popovich era. The first ten things are mostly chapters on the greatest players in the history of the franchise, plus a bit about Pop and a couple of the championships. Some of the things are really obscure, like a mini chapter on current assistant coach Ettore Messina. I really appreciated those chapters, as they fleshed out the full story of the Spurs.
This book is for Spurs fans, so it obviously has a Spurs colored tint to it. I don’t say that to devalue it, however, just to make you aware of what you are getting into if in fact you do decide to read it. I do appreciate, though, that Monroe never uses “we” or “us” when talking about the Spurs and their fans, maintaining journalistic integrity. The quiz at the end of the book was a fun twist as well.
If you are a Spurs fan, buy this book. If not, I would say it would only be necessary to read if you are an absolutely obsessed NBA junkie that just wants to take in as much knowledge as possible. I am, perhaps unfortunately, one of those people so I will be reading other versions of 100 Things… in the future.
